As thousands of new and returning Mustangs kick off the academic year, one of Cal Poly’s biggest campus traditions is back to inspire students to think beyond the classroom – and beyond borders.

The International Center’s annual Study Abroad Fair returns Thursday, Sept. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kennedy Library Courtyard, bringing together students, faculty, international program providers and study abroad alumni for an afternoon of exploration, conversation and global inspiration.

“The International Center’s largest event of the year, the fair connects Cal Poly SLO and Cal Poly Maritime Academy students with hundreds of study abroad and away opportunities while helping them discover programs that fit their goals, budget and schedule.” Whether students dream of spending a year overseas or are simply curious about what’s possible, the event is designed to show that global experiences are within reach for every academic path.

“Studying abroad is one of the most transformative experiences a student can have,” said Cari Vanderkar, assistant vice provost for international programs and senior international officer. “The Study Abroad Fair gives students the chance to see just how many opportunities are available to them and to realize that studying abroad is more attainable than they may think. We love seeing students leave the fair excited about possibilities they hadn’t considered before.”

Students can meet one-on-one with study abroad advisors, faculty program leaders, international education partners, and fellow Mustangs who have already studied away. Representatives will be available to answer questions about academics, finances, housing, travel logistics and the application process while helping students identify programs that align with their degree plans and personal goals.

“We encourage students to come with questions, even if they’re just beginning to think about studying abroad,” said Jessica Michelsen, study away coordinator at the International Center. “Whether you’re wondering how study abroad fits into your major, what scholarships are available, or where to start, we’re here to help turn those questions into a plan.”

The fair will highlight hundreds of programs spanning 70 countries, including faculty-led experiences, semester and yearlong exchanges, internships, research opportunities, multi-country programs, and domestic study away options that don’t require a passport.

Programs range from as little as one week to a full academic year, allowing students to customize an experience that complements their academic schedule. Participants can choose from a variety of housing options — from apartments and residence halls to homestays that offer deeper cultural and language immersion. Students can even experience multiple countries through programs like Semester at Sea, where the ship itself acts as a floating campus.
Making study abroad more accessible remains a top priority for the International Center. . The International Center awards over $800,000 per year in scholarships to support students participating in study abroad and study away programs.

Nationally, only about 10% of U.S. undergraduate students study abroad during college. At Cal Poly, approximately 23% of undergraduates participate in a study abroad experience before graduation — a number that continues to rise, driven by the International Center’s ongoing efforts to expand access and supporting students from all backgrounds.

Whether students are interested in earning academic credit in Europe, conducting research in Asia, completing an internship in Australia or participating in a domestic study away experience, the Study Abroad Fair offers a chance to discover what’s possible — and take the first step toward a life-changing global experience.

Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the free event. No registration is required.
